COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES

Course Description

Students will develop skills used in creating a personal or business webpage. Working on a team or individually, students will, using a hands-on approach, plan, design, and create Webpages for an Intranet or World Wide Web site. Students learn to use a HyperText Markup Language (HTML) editor to create Extensible HyperText Markup Language (XHTML) and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and add behaviors, and to use templates and library items to create Web pages containing hypertext links, video, graphic, and multimedia files.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

  1. Explain the elements involved in planning, designing, testing and maintaining a website.
  2. Produce a working multi-page website with text, image, links, tables, frames, forms and multimedia.
  3. Publish a multi-page website to the Internet.
  4. Control formatting on the web pages using cascading style sheets.
  5. Compare and contrast the differences between HTML and XHTML.
  6. Identify the major HTML tag types.
  7. Manage time and resources of projects from conception to completion.
  8. Identify and demonstrate the skills needed to work with clients and team members.
  9. Analyze the goals, purpose, and mission of a website and then develop design documents based on this analysis.
  10. Test and evaluate the website for ease of use, technical cohesiveness, and effectiveness of website goals.

Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 Hands-On Training ISBN 0-321-50985-4 by Garrick Chow

Buy your textbook anywhere that meets your needs; here are two places I know of. Check the book name and ISBN numbers on the sites below carefully as publishers often change their links as new books are added to their stock; since the prices change periodically, carefully check the price online.

Software:

Dreamweaver CS3 PC or Mac (If you do not have Dreamweaver CS3, go to the Learning Resource Center, fourth floor, or K404 at Mesa College.) This class will use Dreamweaver CS3 to be in sync with the software at Mesa College.

NOTE: There are minor differences between the PC and the Mac version.

Please note: Dreamweaver CS4 has been released in a beta version. At this time, there is not release date from Adobe. Check the Adobe website for information about Dreameaver CS4.

Mesa College Bookstore http://www.bookstore.sdccd.edu has a variety of software. Call the bookstore, visit their website, or stop by to see their current selection.

Make sure that any software you purchase will work with your computer and operating system. Shop around for the service and price that best matches your needs. Links and pricing may change. If you notice a change before I do, please let me know.

Software

Students who do not have access to the equipment, software, and services necessary to take this course at home may use the resources at Mesa College. Computers are available for use in the LRC or the CBTE Department classroom K404. Local public libraries may also have these resources available. Map of the Mesa College campus

Internet Access

You will also need to have an ISP (Internet Service Provider) in order to take this course online.

NOTE: Students have had problems accessing their course website and their system locking up when they use AOL—if possible, avoid AOL.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR CBT 165

  1. Print out this syllabus and read it.
  2. You may order your textbook for this course online or buy it in the Mesa College Bookstore.  For complete ordering directions, read the section in this syllabus on textbook and ordering Information. 
  3. You must log into your course website at least once prior to 8 am on Sept. 5. This will insure that your instructor knows you intend to complete the coursework.  If you do not log into the course prior to this date, the instructor will drop you from the course for nonattendance and a spot will open up to allow someone on the waiting list to add the course by the last day to add. Please note, as written above in the Attendance section, it is the student's responsibility to drop and withdraw from classes, and that it is the instructor's discretion to withdraw a student after the add/drop deadline if it appears that no work or progress is being made on the course work.
  4. Before starting work on this course, study the Blackboard Training - Student Orientation tutorials, which show you how to use the Blackboard Vista tools so that you can successfully complete this online course. 
  5. The assignments and quizzes that you will be turning in to be graded are listed in this syllabus. To access all the work for each week, from the homepage, click on the Lessons icon.
  6. If any of the assignments or quizzes are missing, you will receive a ZERO for that assignment.
  7. Each quiz may be redone. You will receive the higher of the two grades.
  8. Please allow a minimum of 72 hours for assignments and tests to be corrected, a response to be sent to you, and your grade to be entered into the grade log. If I do not check your submissions or email during the weekend, I will do so on Monday.

  9. Any changes to this syllabus will be posted.
  10. Be sure to check both your E-mail and the Discussion Board frequently.
  11. Sometimes unforeseen circumstance arises that prevents the student from finishing his/her work for the course. The final decision on whether to grant an incomplete grade will be based on several factors and is entirely up to the instructor.  If you are requesting an Incomplete to be given to you for this course, you must contact your instructor before the end of the course.
